The emperor penguin is unique amongst penguins in that it breeds during the Antarctic winter.
The emperor penguin can dive to a depth of 535m in order to hunt for food and hold its breath for twenty minutes at a time. It is highly adapted for aquatic life, using its wings as flippers to swim through the ocean whilst hunting for fish and squid.
It is endemic to the Antarctic continent and, like all penguins, it possesses counter-shading plumage, dark on top and lighter underneath, for camouflage whilst swimming. Standing at 1m (39in) tall and weighing up to 45kg (99lb), the Emperor Penguin is the largest species of penguin.
